Engineering solution to back pain

Spinal System-S is the engineering solution to a medical problem.

Taking a fitting for a chair It was invented by Colm Campbell an engineer from Dublin who, more than 25 years ago, was taken unconscious to hospital by ambulance with a ruptured disc. He refused an operation. In great pain, against medical advice and with his wife assisting him, he left hospital. He researched the subject and quickly discovered the fact that 75% of back pain is directly attributable to sitting with bad posture.

He investigated the corollary. What would happen if he eliminated bad posture from the equation? If he sat with good posture? He experimented with his car seat and, after a great deal of trial and error, designed one that allowed him three to four hours pain free driving. Proving perfect posture eliminates back pain.

Soon afterwards he was approached by the main Health Board and was asked to make a chair for a mentally handicapped quadriplegic. It worked. This gave him the inspiration to design and patent a spinal column measuring chair that provided the information to custom tailor office, home, and car seats that provide perfect posture.

S = Perfect Posture

All Spinal System-S Seating is custom tailored. This is because no two backs are the same. The shape, curvature, and size of everyone's back combine to form profiles as unique as fingerprints. A backprint is as unique as a fingerprint.

Colm Campbell started up the Back Shop. Now, over 25 years later, something in the region of 10,000 people from all walks of life are sitting pain free.

Spinal System-S is the method for manufacturing custom tailored office, home, and car seats that guarantee perfect posture, and in over 80% of cases relieve pain.

The person being measured sits in the patented measuring chair. The spine is gently pushed into its S Shape. A template is made, and from this an office, home, or car seat is manufactured that guarantees S. The depth, width, and height of the seat are also made to suit the individual, as are the arm heights. A template of the spine is made

The measurements take about 15 minutes to complete. These provide the information to manufacture an office, home, or car seat to exactly match your physical sprcifications. (See drawing to right). You will then be sitting with:

Perfect Posture, when the pressure in your discs is the least possible.
Your elbows correctly supported, resulting in a large amount of upper bodyweight being transferred from your spine and down your arms, resulting in a further reduction of intervertebral disc pressure.
The depth of seat suiting your requirements
The width of chair suiting your build.
The height of seat allowing you sit with your feet comfortaly resting on the floor

Back sufferers come to us from many different countries. Measurements are taken, and the finished chairs shipped to their addresses. The furthest. and most inaccessible, place was to Ayres Rock in Australia

The chairs look like the conventional ones and are available in a large range of styles. If required, they can be designed to the customers specifications.

At the moment Spinal System-S is available only at The Back Shop in Dublin. However, licenses are available for anyone intersted in selling the chairs in other countries.
